Personal tragedy and grevious loss cause radical change in an individual's world view and a reevaluation of "things that matter". My brother, Gary Puleio, was killed on August 15, 2001 as a result of unsafe working conditions, inadequate regulatory oversite and the pursuit of corporate greed over workers' needs.

What matters to me now is the creation of a just society that values workers and puts peoples' needs and well being before profits.

Laura Richardson
Want a friend in Washington? Elect a union member to Congress. That's what Southern California voters did in a special election this week when they elected Machinists union member Laura Richardson to fill a vacant seat
.

Who is better off today than four years ago when Bush was heading for a second term? It's not you or me. It's the richest 1 percent of Americans. The ones cashing in on unfettered hedge funds and private equity firms' scavenging of the healthy parts of takeover targets. New stats show U.S. workers earned a smaller average income in 2005 than in 2000—the fifth year in a row they had to make ends meet with less money. But there are winners in the Bush economy. The number of taxpayers making more than $1 million a year grew by 26 percent over the same time period—the same folks who enjoyed most of Bush's tax breaks. Enjoy your cake.
