| | A Hand Book for Change The Family Bill of Rights
| First I know this is early however I wanted to make sure it works so if it doesn't I have time to fix it. Also the articles will be back again instead of updates in our support line. I will have smaller updates until March so they can just be added to the blog. As you know I am famous for typo's so excuse them, I just don't have the time to always check my work but it doesn't mean I don't careJ. If you had the time to read the blog you probably know most of what you are about to read but here you go anyhow. The H&S Summit/APHA H&S Convention The H&S Activist Summit was set up this year to address actions that could be taken by various groups as a whole. The simpleton version: The summit opened with the H&S Summit Memorial and the hyperlink in written form is in the Weekly Toll Blog section. (This was also viewed at the APHA H&S Awards luncheon and a last minute talk at another APHA session.) The discussion panels were based on building campaigns around ergonomics, fighting illness and injury cover ups, and Safety nets for Immigrant workers, youth and families of fatalities. Peter Dooley guided the panelist: · Peg Seminario of the AFL-CIO who gave a great overall; get it in gear and why speech. · Janet Foley of CSEA explained issues surrounding ergonomics and some of the awesome programs they have for training that address both workers and management. · Tammy Miser of USMWF gave an overview of the family bill of rights and why some were put into play. (We released the Family Bill of Rights for a print version of the: "Family Bill of Rights" and if you want the "Cover Page" ( http://usmwf.org/family_packet.htm). The Stan plan is that while we are helping other families through their grief we gather accounts that coincide with each right. When we get enough to push the right we send it to the Education and Labor Committee and our Reps to push for change. This way we have proof that it is an issue and people to back it up. This will also gain awareness to the families left behind) · Isabel Lopez of MASSCOSH discussed the issues surrounding immigrant workers, which we are know some of which are completely inhumane. · Marry Miller spoke about young workers; their needs and issues surrounding their inexperience's. When the Summit minutes are out I will make sure they are made available to you all. It always helps to see what's going on inside. It also gives other a chance to express their concerns and comments. I know this is very brief but due to lack of space and time it is all I can do at the moment but I feel we have gained both awareness and support by this introduction and will elaborate on this at a later date. So Three Big Cheerios to all! The APHA was absolutely amazing and I wish all families were able to go just for the experience. I have never seen so many well meaning, dedicated and accepting individuals in one place. Being a country girl I'm always nervous for a couple of weeks before I am off. I really hate speaking and traveling (by the way I know there have to be other family members who could do so much better so if you like WMD is in April so holler at me) and when you are going to the George Washington Convention Center full of experienced Phd's you just know you will make a fool of yourself but the whole lot were extremely accommodating, inviting and down to earth. I would recommend anyone wanting change to go. As a matter of fact if you have an interest then please let it be known. We can find areas for you and if there are enough I will see we are able to get sponsors, something I wish I had done this year. A couple of people received Awards and they were all deserving. I know Celeste and she was as wonderful and as busy as she always seems to be. I had the chance to meet Jadish and he was delightful, very kind and very dedicated he has done wonders in his region. I will make sure we get and interview with him as I am sure he has a lot he can teach us. Jonathan, I thought would be intimidating but he and his beautiful wife (which has a great voice by the way) were wonderful. Jonathon is very committed to workplace violence prevention and was one of the first to take this area on. Unfortunately I didn't have the pleasure of meeting Rosie but she is cute as a button. Last was Tammy and to be honest I don't know what to think about her…haha. |

Just in case you don't know already Jordan and Peter have been my guides and counselors in many areas. They both have the amazing ability to drag you along without your knowledge and once you do gain the knowledge it's way too late to back out…haha got to love em! Oh and I almost forgot the highlight. There were several individuals who brain stormed a skit. It was too cute and yep I had a small part, very small thank God. It was taped and when it's posted I will pass it along. One of the songs Pandemic Flu Song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XviF9ACuakQ) was written by Mark Catlin and you have to check out the inspiration. I couldn't believe it and the government wonders why we have little faith in them at times. I also had the pleasure of meeting many other people to numerous to mention but I plan on writing about a few. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We plan to release the competed resource guide for Workers Memorial Day. We just received a "Guidelines for Making Public Statements" written by a very generous Lawyer: Jeff Roberts graduated law school and was sworn into the Kentucky Bar Association in 1992 and since has concentrated on helping injured workers and their families get the benefits they need and are entitled too. Jeff Roberts (http://www.jeffrobertslaw.com/) handles Workers Compensation claims, Social Security claims and Personal Injury claims. Jeff Roberts frequently speaks at legal education seminars, the Kentucky Bar Association and the Kentucky Academy of Trial Attorneys (now known as the Kentucky Justice Association), as well as others organizations. Jeff Roberts has been on the Board of Governors of the KJA (http://www.kentuckyjusticeassociation.org/KY/) since 1999 and is also a founding member of the Board of Governors for Kentucky Work Place Injury Litigation Group (KyWILG http://www.wilg.org/index.asp). Thank you Mr. Roberts! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Also Note that we had some major issues with the email server and I know there were some lost emails so if you did not get a response please do email once again. There were also some news alerts lost and we will still try to get to them but there is no guarantee, so if we lost some of our workers for the toll I am sorry. I feel terrible but unfortunately there is nothing I can do. As you can see we have a new news letter format and sending. The other had to many issues so let's see how this works. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We Have a new writer Thank God maybe the newsletters will get back on track w/no typos. Thank you Kelly Heilert! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I spoke to Chad Cook's mother and they have not received the investigation report as of yet but MSHA has assured that it is on its way. Mrs. Cook sends her Thanks to you all for your support! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ As Always feel free to send us your comments and suggestions and Maggie we will add your suggestion along with a couple of others to the Resource Guide thanks for the comment I feel organ donation is an important issue also.
